City cops plan to arm women with pepper spray

CHENNAI: Women walking on the streets of Chennai often face harassment or get their jewelery snatched, but can do little about it except shout back at the offender. Now they have another option – pepper spray, which they can pick up from the Thoraipakkam police station on the IT corridor.

Assistant commissioner of police (ACP) KN Murali on Friday unveiled a new initiative, aimed at providing working women who keep late hours with a sense of security. Murali did a demo for an audience gathered inside the commissioner’s office in Egmore.

“I have given at least 10 pepper sprays, each costing Rs 500, to IT professionals staying in hostels and women staying alone after getting a proper petition from them and verifying whether they needed such a deterrent,” said Murali before whipping out a can and spraying it into the air. Within a few seconds, all the people gathered at the venue experienced irritation in their eyes.

“If this spray comes in contact with anyone’s eyes, their vision will be blinded for at least three hours. If it comes in contact with any body part, it will create itching and swelling,” said Murali.

Look at this wonderful piece of action from the Tamil Nadu Police. Another beautiful example of “It happens only in India”…  If you don’t know what pepper spray is, you would be surprised to know that it is illegal to carry pepper spray out in the public.. It is considered lethal in many countries.. It is considered Legal in many countries too to carry pepper spray, but no country has ever done a public donation of Pepper Spray like how our great Tamilnadu Govt has done..

I am surprised how the esteemed officers fail to analyze the effects of their decisions??  Anyway let us talk about this..

Couple of things that strike my mind is to start with this again is a woman centric law that the police have thought of. Woman will get hurt so give them the pepper spray.. like the theif really cares about the gender of the person who he is stealing the stuff from, unless he is sex hunger and he finds this career oriented woman walking in the chennai streets at 12 in the night after a successful day at work. Anyway point to Stick on to is Only woman are attacked.. The news paper breaks the news with saying

What will anybody do when an armed man attacks.. Whether it is a man or a woman.. Only films will have this sooper human guy who will do karate kung fu and all sorts and fight with 15 men with big knifes and guns…  SO police sir, Can men also please have these wonderful devices please?  We men do not have a revolver hanging on to our trousers like you do and nor are we Khaki clad to make the thief run away..

Second aspect of this…

How intelligent is it to arm the public with weapons like this?? Is it another form of woman empowerment??  Will Some WOMAN’S commissions and Pink Panther Woman’s Fanatical Club come and ssay it should be given to all the daughters in-law  as they really enter a very dangerous zone after the marriage.. and then they can use this against inlaws … Hey !! thinking about it i think that idea sounds good to me.. It just blinds the in-laws for three hours…as opposed to Binding the in-laws to the  Jail house for more than a week.. The trouble is though when she would demand things at gun point ( ermmm,, pepper point i mean )

Anyway lez have some more pepper fun..  I got digressed , i apologize .. I was talking about how intelligent could it be to arm the public with these weapons??? did the police do any kind of a responsible study before doing this??

First of all, it is a common rule that any law that is made has a misuse clause to it too, more so when it is a law made for woman, it definitely gets screwed by the same woman lot.. Couldn’t a Gangster woman go to the police station and get the pepper spray and spray on the public to snatch jeweleries?? Simple thought right?
Then there is a one in 100 chance that the victim of chain snatch also has a pepper spray so, its who ever sprays first wins..

We definitely have more crimes than chain snatching in the society right? Shall we have one solution for each of these crimes please Mr . Officer?

We look upon you to make sure the society is crime free by making sure that law and order is ENFORCED not just made… and you are trying to start of a public civil crime of new dimensions?
